Well-prepared and maintained windows not only provide thermal comfort indoors, but also save energy and money. In this article, we look at how to properly prepare for winter and how to keep your windows in the best possible condition.

Preparing windows before winter

  • Seal check:

The first step is a thorough inspection of the window seals. If you feel cold air flowing, it's time to repair it. The seals may be damaged, weathered or clogged with debris. If this is the case, replacing the seals or repairing them is the best solution.

  • Isolation:

In addition to sealing, you can increase the insulating capacity of your windows with insulating films or panels. These materials are easy to apply and help provide better thermal insulation.

  • Cleaning and maintenance:

Before winter, it is important to thoroughly clean the windows inside and out. Dirty windows can impair insulation properties and reduce the amount of light that enters the room.

  • Room ventilation:

Make sure you have enough fresh air before closing the windows for the winter. A well-functioning fan or ventilation is essential for maintaining the air quality in the room.

  • Curtains and blinds:

Curtains or blinds can be useful in winter not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to increase the insulating capacity of windows. By pulling heavier curtains at night, you can reduce heat loss.

  • Inspection of window frames:

Check the window frames themselves. If they are damaged or cracked, this can cause insulation problems. Repair them as necessary.

Window maintenance during winter

  • Snow and ice removal:

If snow falls on or around the windows, remove it so it doesn't melt and get into the seals. This can cause subsequent leakage problems.

  • Ventilation:

In winter, it is important to always have access to fresh air. Ventilating the room regularly for short periods can help maintain a healthy indoor atmosphere and prevent condensation on the windows.

  • Glass maintenance:

Keep the glass on your windows clean and free of scratches to make them as transparent as possible. Regular washing and careful cleaning of the glass with soft cloths is important.

  • Inspection and repair of seals:

During the winter, keep a regular check on your window seals. If you find any damage, repair it immediately.

How to set winter and summer mode on plastic windows?

After opening the window, locate the place where the fitting is located (usually the edge by the handle). When converting, bear in mind that windows are always set to summer mode from the factory, remember this in case you are converting from winter to summer mode.

  • In winter mode you have to turn the screw on the side exactly 90°, but be careful, you don't have to do it in one stroke the first time. When doing this, focus on the line that will guide you how many more degrees you need to turn. If you have changed to winter mode you will find this out with a simple test, the handle on the window will move harder when opening/closing. By doing this you have pressed the window more against the rubber, resulting in a better seal.
  • You set the windows to summer mode in a similar way to winter mode. You simply turn the screw as it was before you set the winter mode. That is, by 90° in reverse. With a good summer mode set, turning the crank will go easier. You will also install the patio door in the same way.

Different manufacturers may have different types of pins, but the principle is the same.

Thoroughly preparing and maintaining your windows before winter can greatly improve the comfort of your home and help you save on energy costs. Remember that every step in preparation and maintenance is important, and proper window care can provide you with a warm and cozy home even during the coldest months of the year.
